Students' Summer Work Opportunities’ Scheme 2023

 

The Students' Maintenance Grants’ Board (SMGB) within the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, in collaboration with the Institute for the Public Service within the People and Standards’ Division at the Office of the Prime Minister, is inviting full-time students to apply for the Students’ Summer Work Opportunities’ Scheme 2023.

 

Who may apply

Full-time students having finished their compulsory secondary education (Form V/Year 11) and those currently studying at Post-Secondary, Vocational and Tertiary Level including those in the final year of their studies.

 

Students following a compulsory placement/internship during the summer period as part of their course of studies should not apply under this scheme.

 

Online Application

Students interested to apply, should submit an online application at https://edurecruitment.gov.mt/ and upload the scans of both sides of their Identity Card.  

 

Students who will finish compulsory secondary education during this current scholastic year (2022-2023) are required to submit a declaration from the respective Head of School to prove that they have finished Form V/Year 11. Failure to submit the requested information properly, including the requested scans, may disqualify students from this scheme.

 

Non-EU students must check with Jobsplus whether they require a valid permit to work in Malta. Thus, these students are required to upload a valid Jobsplus work permit with their application.

 

Applications  will open  on  Thursday, 30th March 2023 at noon  and  will close on Friday 28th April 2023.

 

Eligible students will be requested to do an online test following the acceptance of their application.

 

Work Phases

 

Students opting for Playworker Opportunity at FES (Foundation for Educational Services) Skolasajf

 

Students opting for a Summer Work Opportunity as Playworkers at FES to form part of the Skolasajf 2023 Team are given the opportunity to work the full eight (8) weeks with a week shutdown in between. These students are to apply for Phase 1 only.

14th till 18th August 2023

 

Remuneration and Entitlement for Playworkers

 

*     Remuneration for this work is pegged at an hourly rate of €7.38 in line with basic pay of Salary Scale 16 of the Public Service. 

 

*      Prospective Playworkers will also be required to attend three (3) days of paid training that will occur prior to the Skolasajf. The training aims at preparing students for the role of Playworker and instilling a number of skills required for the post.

 

*      Students participating in this scheme will be requested to work a minimum of 22.5 hours for up to a maximum of 30 hours per week, from Monday to Friday.

 

*     Students opting for Playworkers at FES are entitled for:

                     *Calculations are based on 22.5 hour week

 

Students opting for the other areas of studies

 

Students selecting one of the other areas of studies will be working one (1) phase of four (4) weeks. To this end, students are required to apply for Phase I or Phase 2 by submitting a separate application for each phase. Yet, students may also apply for both work phases. The engagement for both phases will depend on the number of applications that the Board will be receiving from interested employers in the Public Service/Public Sector.

 

However, being that this is a work opportunity, the Students’ Maintenance Grants’ Board is in no way bound to place students according to the area of study they applied for, since this depends on the employers’ requests as well as on the ranking applicants shall obtain following an online test upon confirmation of their application.

 

Students that may be required to have their work phase extended upon request from their employer following approval of the SMGB, need to have another Jobsplus Engagement and Termination Form filled in to cover the additional period of work phase.

 

Phase 1

10th July 2023 – 4th August 2023

Phase 2

16th August 2023 – 12th September 2023

 

 

 

 

 

Remuneration and Entitlement

Remuneration for this work is pegged at an hourly rate of €7.38 in line with basic pay of Salary Scale 16 of the Public Service. 

Students participating in this scheme are entitled per phase as follows:

 

Vacation Leave

Sick Leave

8 hours on full pay

8 hours on half pay

 

 

Jobsplus

 

Students are to ensure with their employer that once assigned a job, their employment is registered with Jobsplus via the Engagement Form as per Chapter 594 (Employment and Training Services Act).  The Jobsplus Termination Form must be submitted by the employer at the end of each work phase.

 

Failure to register a Commencement and Termination of a job may result in incorrect data being shown on the students’ Jobsplus Employment History.

 

 

Students’ Organisations

 

The Students’ Maintenance Grants’ Board welcomes applications from students who wish to work for recognised Students’ Organisations in Educational Institutions during Summer.

Students’ Organisations have to be registered with the Students’ Maintenance Grants’ Board as per Registration of Work Provision by Employers (PS13/2023 Circular).  Projects need to be approved by the Students’ Maintenance Grants Board as stipulated in the PS13/2023 Circular for Students’ Summer Work Opportunities’ Scheme 2023.

 

 

Other Notes:

 

a.  Please note that students receive the bonus and any other benefits such as vacation leave, sick leave (against presentation of medical certificate) and income supplement on a pro rata basis.

b. Vacation leave which is not availed of till the end of each work phase is non-refundable.

c. The application form referred to in this circular is specifically for the Summer Work Opportunities’ Scheme and will not be considered for any other scheme.

d.  Full-time students studying at Post-Secondary, Vocational and Tertiary Level and who are not-stipend eligible are required to upload proof that they are still studying, including a scanned copy of their  Acceptance Letter/Enrolment letter for academic year 2022-2023 and a recent Jobsplus Employment History.
